Surrattsville High Some of Our History

Did you know . . . that our high school building 6101 Garden Drive in Clinton opened in 1960? The original school on Surratts Road was built in 1906 and was the third high school to serve Prince George’s County. It eventually became the middle school for the area and some of our classmates went to school there. After the old building closed and stood vacant for a while Grace Brethren Church bought it in 1984, renovated it, and still uses it today. Does anyone know what year the Surrattsville Middle School closed its doors?

Can you remember what the date was of our Class of 1985 graduation? Well, it was May 31 and our commencement took place at 11:00 AM at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland.

Do all you know the Cap Center (renamed USAir Arena) no longer exists either? The building was demolished with explosives on Sunday, December 15, 2002 to make room for a new shopping center which was named Cap Ctr on the Blvd. The new mall provides accessible shopping to all the residents of that region of Prince George’s County. This link might interest you on who the unique structure of the Cap Center (sorry not able to call it anything else) was demolished: http://www.arcaro.org/tension/album/usair.htm The sight of its demise however, might be too heart breaking for anyone who saw some good concerts or hockey games there though.

Our prom . . . . . was held on Saturday, May 4, 1985 and our theme was “Just You And I”. Do you still have any of your pictures? Did you go? Who was your date? Did the evening end well for you? What was your favorite part of Prom? We know that Aneta McCrone married her prom date in December 7, 1985.

Early in our Junior Year, the Homecoming Float Committee worked into the early morning hours before the homecoming parade putting the finishing touches our “tiger jumping through a ring of fire float” as part of the circus theme that year. We won a well-deserved 1st place for our invention!

Later during our Junior Year we hosted a ring turning dance with a “Thriller” theme since Michael Jackson was so popular. Who came up with the idea of putting those glow-in-the-dark eyes up on the stage back drop?? Cool idea!

At the end of our Sophmore year we took a class trip to Kings Dominion. It was a fun day but when we were all loaded on the bus and the heads were counted . . . a few male students were still MIA. We found out later they were in line getting food or something. . . . anyone willing to own up to that one?

And yes . . .what did happen on the Band Trip to Ocean City that got so many kids in trouble? I know, I know . . . if you told us, you’d have to hurt us right! Actually, on this web site’s The True Story section, the stories are now being told.

Now as adults with established lives of our own, modern technology is allowing us to reconnect in a free, friendly and nostalgic way. Please join fellow members, from the Surrattsville Class of 1985, on our web site. Let’s rekindle old friendships and share life stories, family photographs, and stay connected with family news.
